Breast Cancer - The last six days I’ve been with my sister. Her double mastectomies and implants were last week. They had her in surgery over 13 hours. She is home now, courageously facing the pain from the sutures and six drain tubes. Today I helped her get a sponge bath. Her incisions went straight across her back from side to side and did not quite meet in the middle. Additionally she had circular incisions from the removal of her breasts. The oncologist surgeon and plastic surgeon did a remarkable job on my sister. In fact, M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston is the ONLY place to go when you have had the “C” diagnosis. They are miracle workers and angels in our world.
When you look for courageous people in our world, look for breast cancer survivors. There is no other type of disease that can be so dibilitating to a woman’s body. These women amaze me with their courage. Each one has faced their own disease and its’ complications with a very firm grip on reality. The startling realization that they are without the disease should give each one a reason to rejoice and live life to the fullest. And each of us without breast cancer needs to honor them as they live and breathe courage.
