Lunch

The last three days I’ve been in the Virginia Beach, VA area for my job.  Actually, all I did was work and stay in my hotel room reading.  Rather than going out for dinner I went to the grocery store to get low fat/low calorie “steamers”.  They are nutritious, quite a lot of food for a frozen dinner, and very tasty.

Anyway, while on this trip I remembered to eat lunch everyday.  It’s funny how people react when you don’t know them and you watch them. I am continually amazed at the way some of these spouses are verbally abusive to one another in public.  It made me very sad.

I used to be self-conscious about eating alone in a restaurant.  I’ve gotten over that now.  Remembering to eat lunch is something most people don’t struggle to do.  However, I’ve skipped lunch for so many years that I have to purposely remind myself to do it.

In fact, it was quite enjoyable.  I read the forthcoming book, Monster of Florence, A True Story by Douglas Preston with Mario Spezi, and watched all of the people eating in the Panera Bread shop with me.  As a side note, this book is fabulous.  I hope you go and buy it when it’s released in June, 2008.  I’m not usually a “crime” novel kind of gal…but I received the advance reading copy, and I haven’t been able to put it down.  Oh, the webs men weave……

The cover of the book shows the sculpture by

GIOVANNI DA BOLOGNA
Rape of the Sabines

Anyway, I noticed that lots of people read the newspaper, but only one other man was reading a book.  That’s a sad commentary on our society….not many people read books in public places anymore.

So, in addition to nutrition, lunch time is educational and fun.  Perhaps that will entice me to eat lunch regularly!

Isn’t it funny how lunch and reading have become a forgotten art? I have recently gone back to making sure I take a lunch break and make sure to eat something healthy for lunch. I now spend time with my lunch at local Panera bread. I too read everyday now when I am there. I used to try to cram in as much of my reading at the gym, and in the bathroom and before bed - but it always seemed like a rushed-read. Now I am able to continue my learning and continue my growth through reading at a more leisurely and enjoyable pace – which allows for some great absorption – lunch and knowledge. Reading is a definite way to increase your level of knowledge. And then with that knowledge you look for organization of it – creating power and success from your ORGANIZED knowledge. Something I read: This reminds me of a story related to those of us who spend some of our free time reading in an area of personal interest. It has been stated that if you read in an area of your interest for thirty minutes a day, within three years you will be known in your community. Add another two years to make five years all the while reading thirty minutes per day in the same area of interest, and you will be know nationally. Finally, add just two more years to total seven, and by reading just thirty minutes a day in this same area, you will be known internationally in this specialized field. Why is this so? First of all, 98% of individuals do not have the self-discipline to read just thirty minutes a day and even more so, 98% of the people cannot stick with or determine a definite area of interest that they want to hitch their star to for peak performance.
