Today I received my first issue of All Animals the publication for members of the Humane Society of the United States. Nestled in the amazing articles were letters about a blog called “Vegetarian Wednesday” http://vegetarian-wednesday.blogspot.com/
This blog is the result of a mom who wanted to support her young daughter as she began the journey of becoming a vegetarian. There are so many great resources on this blog and even recipes! I do like the idea of having at least one meatless day per week.
Since so many of us in America are obese and unhealthy, it really wouldn’t hurt any of us to give up meat MORE than one day a week. Our hearts would be healthier, we would consume fewer calories, and even contribute to the environment when we aren’t supporting the slaughter of animals.
In the South and West we are having drought conditions and many are asking what we’re going to do for water in the near future. Do you KNOW how much water it takes to produce a pound of beef? This quote is from Vegetarian Wednesday, “Keep in mind that in order to produce one pound of california beef, it takes 5,214 gallons of water, 1, 630 for pork, and 815 for chicken. That means 1 pound of beef equals the same amount of water used in 6 months of showers!!!” WOW, that’s amazing. I’d rather have the water to drink and water my plants than use it to produce meat.
As I’m trying to consume fewer calories, less fat and fewer refined sugars, I am convinced that a vegetarian Wednesday is a good choice for me. Sign me up boys! I love those veggies anyway, and this will require little or NO effort to take a step in the right direction.
